If you’re a man, you just want to think of the factor 34. So, if your US size is 11, add 34 to that and you’ll get 45.
For females, it’s a factor of 31. If you’re a size 8, add 31 and you’re size is going to be EU 39.

Why don’t Ecco shoes come in half sizes and wide widths?
Even though Ecco shoes have no widths, they solve the problem with what they call their Extra Width Insole.
This is incorporated in all of their newer shoes going forward. They couldn’t change the molds back on the older styles they had and so the Extra Width Insole is a great technique and it’s good to help fit people that are in between Ecco sizes.
So, you try a 43 and it just feels a little snug and then you try 44 and you just feel like your foot’s moving around too much in it.
The idea is you pull out the insole and right underneath it, you’ll see a finished insole that says extra width. Removing the top insole is going to create a little bit of extra volume and width in the shoe.
So, you would get the 43 that fits too snug, remove the insole, and that’s going to free up room and create that better fit for you, giving you a way to play with that half size if you really want to dial in that specific size.

DIP is short for Direct Inject Processing. This basically means that the upper seamlessly sits on a mold and then they inject a one-piece polyurethane midsole and outsole. This process fuses the midsole and the upper together without using glues, which makes them very different.
Hydromax is just the technology they use to treat their leathers.

Freedom Fit
Two things are really important when it comes to fit. First, you don’t want your shoes to be loose in the heel and eventually slip off. Second, you don’t want your toes and forefoot to get crammed up in the toebox.
When your foot is crammed up into the toebox, it binds up your muscles and it just leads to foot fatigue and you don’t get circulation. The more you’re on your feet, the more your feet swell and so you want some room to have those toes grow into that toebox.
So the way Ecco shoes fit is actually pretty unique. They use what they call the Freedom Fit approach which basically means that Ecco shoes are designed to fit snug in the heel, snug in the instep, and then roomy in the forefoot to allow for natural toe splay.
So even if the shoe is slightly too big from what you’re used to, you’re not going to be slipping out of it because the snugness in the heel and instep is going to provide that security.

Unlike a lot of companies where the comfort comes from an insole, Ecco actually got a fully constructed footbed within the shoe. Their footbeds are made of Polyurethane which has a little bit of give to it but always comes back to its original shape.

Because of those high-quality materials, you know you’re going to get an Ecco shoe that’s going to last a very long time. And because they’re using polyurethane in the footbed, it’s just going to fit underneath your foot for years to come.
A lot of people that have an Ecco shoe say it’s just as comfortable in year 5 as it was the day they got it out of the box.

Ecco History
Ecco is a Danish company and they have a growing presence in North America. They’re this little-known brand that has slowly become the 4th largest golf brand in the world.
Right at the top of the history section on their website, it says “Ambition without compromise”.
It all started in 1928 when Karl Toosbuy was born. As he grew up and entered the workforce, he became a manager at a footwear factory and he saw some holes in the industry and thought he could start his own shoe company.

1963 to 1970s
In 1963, Karl and Birte started Ecco in Denmark. By the end of 1963, they already had 74 employees. In the late 60s and early 70s, they started making shoes with skinnier heels called the Venus. In 1978, Ecco launched a new range of designs by Ejnar Truelsen called the Ecco Joke. Ecco Joke was a large reign of both men and women’s shoes featuring variations of the original moccasin style.
1980s to Present Day
They expanded manufacturing to:

Overall, Ecco is a kind of a sleeping giant in the footwear industry because they’re mostly popular with people who are wanting comfortable dress shoes, casual shoes, sandals, golf shoes, and even boots.
However, they haven’t really made it into that hype culture and more modern-looking sneakers. They’ve kind of just carved out their own industry in their own segment of the footwear industry.

As Ecco started to expand and grow, they really grew in a vertically integrated business model, which means they actually own the tannery that manufactures the leather for them.
Red Wing is an example of a vertically integrated company that allows them to control more of the process and potentially drop the prices down because there are no middlemen.
They own the whole vertically integrated supply chain as much as possible. This allowed them to grow in a very efficient way and very profitable way.

Ecco Yucatan Offroad
From a construction standpoint, Ecco is one of the greatest companies when it comes to manufacturing quality sandals and footwear at really high skill.
The Yucatan has been around of 18+ years and it’s been the same exact thing every time. This is a really great strappy sandal that really holds the foot in really well. There are three points of adjustability in the back, over the front, and at the toe.
The straps are really good for people with narrow-sized feet and it’s also great for wider feet.
The neoprene inside and the nubuck outside actually mean that this shoe is going to be water-resistant. So, if you’re taking a walk on the trail and you accidentally step in a puddle, you don’t have to worry. It’s going to dry out just fine.
In terms of sizing, the Yucatan Offroad comes in European sizes 36-42.

Footbed & Midsole
The Yucatan has got an incredibly soft microfiber footbed designed to prevent the feet from sticking. There’s a really great tread on the bottom which is going to offer the security you would want on all kinds of terrains.
The midsole construction is called FluidForm. Basically, it’s a liquid polyurethane that gets shot into a mold and it seals around the upper.
In terms of stability, the Yucatan has got the receptor technology, which has been around for two decades, to give you a little more torsional stability when it comes to PU midsoles.
The built-in arch support is actually going to help align your body and put the pressure on your foot where it actually belongs, which is going to be in the midfoot.
The Yucatan Offroad is good for multiple foot issues such as:
- Plantar Fasciitis because it has the arch support
- Heel spurs because it does have a slightly cupped heel
- Morton’s Neuroma and Metatarsalgia because the toe box is adjustable
The adjustability on the strap also means that it’s going to be good for bunions as well, especially because that neoprene inside is nice and stretchy so you’re really going to be able to get your foot in there and yet hold it still at the same time.
Also, because the shoe doesn’t bend a whole lot, it’s going to keep your foot very anatomically happy.

Ecco Biom G5
Ecco continues to be one of the best golf shoe manufacturers.
When you think of Ecco shoes, you generally think of spikeless shoes because they were kind of the ones that invented the spikeless golf shoe.
With the new G5, you’re getting the best of both worlds. Parts of the sole are similar to what you’re going to see in their spikeless hybrid models, but then they also have traditional spikes.
This one has the Boa laces which you may love or hate. But it truly allows you to kind of get that perfect fit, and you don’t have to worry about your shoes coming untied all the time.
Ecco shoes aren’t cheap and the Biom is over $200, but I love what they’ve been doing with the look. I think the latest Ecco shoes to come out are some of the best-looking shoes they’ve ever created. This is a pair of shoes that is going to last you a very long time to come.
The Biom series has got some longevity to them. They’re very quality, they’re very comfortable, and they do have a price tag to go along with it.
What about boots…
Ecco Staker Boots
The Staker is made in Portugal and it’s $270.
This is a unique one because it’s very different from all the traditionally-made boots because there’s a literal slab of one-inch thick memory foam throughout the midsole.
It’s going to be the absolute moc toe out there. But because of comfort, a lot of times you sacrifice durability and longevity. The Staker has got a thin rubber skin on the bottom that’s only five millimeters thick at the lugs compared to an entire wedge you’d have to wear through.
It could be argued these would wear the same rate, but they’re still not going to wear quite nearly as long as a full rubber outsole.
The good is the Staker is going to be one of the most comfortable moc toes in the world and it’s very comfortable. The bad is it’s just not going to last as long, and because it’s a direct injected construction, a cobbler’s not going to want to resole this for you.
Overall, if you want a moc toe and you want comfort and that’s all that you care about, this is one of the most comfortable moc toes even though it might be a little bit pricey compared to some of the traditionally made boots.
