A Legacy of Excellence

Before diving into the specifics of the 840, it’s essential to understand the legacy of the 840 series. New Balance’s 840 series has a long history of delivering high-quality athletic footwear. This neutral running shoe was designed to cater to neutral runners, meaning it provides a stable platform for those whose feet do not overpronate or underpronate.

The New Balance 840v4 built upon the success of its predecessors, introducing several key features that made it a standout choice for runners:

Performance

Runners who have experienced the New Balance 840 often praised it for its comfortable cushioning, making it an ideal choice for long-distance runs. The shoe’s support was also worth noting, as it struck a balance between stability and natural movement.

But the 840 wasn’t just a running shoe; it was a partner in the pursuit of personal fitness goals. It was there through the ups and downs of countless running journeys.

Now that I’ve refreshed your memory about the 840, let’s dive in and explore what the New Balance Fresh Foam X 840v1 has to offer under the hood.

Introducing the Fresh Foam X 840v1
A New Era in New Balance Running

Step into the latest addition to New Balance’s lineup, the Fresh Foam X 840v1, and experience a fresh take on running footwear. This shoe, initially designed for low-impact daily wear, has proven itself to be a versatile choice, bridging the gap between everyday comfort and high-quality running performance.

As I laced up this pair, I was intrigued by several aspects that set it apart. However, it’s important to note that the Fresh Foam X 840v1 isn’t a performance shoe in the traditional sense. I didn’t experience a significant springiness on the push-off, and it’s now maximally stacked, it lacks the marshmallowy feel often associated with max cushion shoes like the New Balance Fresh Foam X More v4.

I’ve put the 840v1 to the test on sand, wet surfaces, and dry pavement. On sand, the shoe’s lugs provided excellent traction. Running on a wet road felt no different from a dry one, making it a reliable choice for rainy days.

Transitioning to the 840v1

For those who were fans of the discontinued 840, the transition to the Fresh Foam X 840v1 involves changes in density, drop, and fit. The older 840 had a denser midsole, while the Fresh Foam X on the new 840v1 is noticeably more plush.

Built on a PL4 last, the 840v1 falls somewhere in between, not as dense as the old 840 but denser than the Fresh Foam X More v4, offering a balance that brings stiffer forefoot responsiveness, which is appreciated by those seeking to replace the discontinued 840.

As for stack height, the previous 840 had a 10mm drop and a lower stack height of 28mm in the heel and 18mm in the forefoot in contrast to the 840v1, which now features a whopping 35mm stack height in the heel and 31mm in the forefoot for a significantly lower  4mm heel-to-toe drop.

Primarily due to the considerable reduction in the heel drop, transitioning to the 840v1 demands a degree of caution as this can significantly affect the way your feet and legs interact with the shoe. So, make sure to gradually adapt to this new profile to ensure a smooth and injury-free transition.

In terms of fit, the 840v1 retains the depth and accommodation while introducing a slightly slimmer profile compared to the old 840. It’s a transition that welcomes newcomers while comforting loyal fans. The slight stiffness in the rocker and increased softness make the 840v1 a promising successor.

The 840v1 features a molded heel that offers better comfort and support, especially at the back of the shoe. I could feel the difference this made in terms of stability during my runs.

APMA

Notably, the 840v1 has received the approval of the American Podiatric Medical Association, highlighting its support and comfort features.

When a running shoe receives the APMA seal of acceptance, it signifies that the shoe has met specific criteria for comfort, support, and overall foot health. This certification is typically granted to shoes that promote good foot posture and provide adequate support and cushioning, making them suitable choices for individuals seeking footwear that aligns with sound podiatric principles and may reduce the risk of foot-related issues during physical activity.

Sustainability and Sizing

However, in terms of sustainability, it’s worth noting that I couldn’t find any mention of recycled materials used in this shoe, which could be a consideration for environmentally-conscious runners.

If you’re into sustainability, these are some great eco-friendly running shoes. Give it a read!

On the bright side, New Balance is well-regarded for its range of sizes. The men’s sizes span from 7 to 16, including half sizes, and the women’s sizes from 5 to 13. Additionally, the shoe is available in wide and extra wide sizes, ensuring that there’s a comfortable fit for every foot shape. I opted for my usual size 9, and the fit was spot on, offering ample room for my toes and a wide toe box.

Appearance and Fit

Visually, the Fresh Foam X 840v1 has a fresh, sharp, and understated look that caught my eye. The shoe blends well with both running attire and everyday wear, making it a versatile choice.

One of the most impressive aspects is the fit. The shoe’s no-sew mid-foot support hugged my feet comfortably with no unnecessary movement. The wide toe box was a pleasant surprise, allowing my toes to feel relaxed even during longer runs. Kudos to New Balance for offering a wide range of sizes that cater to a variety of foot shapes.

In conclusion, New Balance has done an impressive job with the Fresh Foam X 840v1. It’s a versatile shoe that excels in everyday use and delivers solid performance for runners. As we bid farewell to the discontinued 840, we welcome a new era of running with the Fresh Foam X 840v1, promising a comfortable and supportive journey for our feet.
